COMMERCIAL ECO FLOORING
Finding an Eco-friendly or Green commercial flooring solution is not that hard; flooring manufacturers and distributors have created programs to lower their overall impact on the environment, programs that go way beyond using recycled materials in their products. And here at Carpet & Tile Mart we fully understand the benefits to all of these products. We can use this knowledge to help you find the right eco-friendly flooring for your project.
Manufacturers today are doing everything they can to use recycled product in the floors they create. For instance, Mohawk recycles everything from bottle caps to old carpeting to create a carpet backing that is not only made of recycle materials, but is also completely recyclable back into itself. Armstrong has been recycling corkscrap into their linoleum since 1909, and 25% of all plastic bottles collected in North America is recycled into carpet fiber by Mohawk alone, a practice shared by all the large carpet manufacturers.
Using readily renewable products is another initiative manufacturers are striving for. Commercial SmartStrand Carpet with DuPont Sorona by Mohawk is made with 37% corn sugar. The SmartStrand fiber is also 100% recyclable, Mohawk has developed a process to re-mill the used fiber and spin it back into new fiber. Not only is SmartStrand environmentally responsible, it is also extremely durable, colorfast, inherently stain resistant, bleach resistant and soft. This fiber offers a comfort level that has never been offered in a commercial setting before.
Mohawk and Shaw have implemented programs to recycle old carpeting; as long as it meets their minimum requirements, they will remove old, used carpeting and take it to a facility to be recycled back into new carpeting. Shaw’s Cradle-to-Cradle program monitors and manufactures fibers and products that are 100% recyclable, creating a 360˚ circle of sustainability.
Many of our manufacturing partners believe that building green starts at home; Armstrong’s headquarters in Lancaster, PA was awarded the highest possible certification granted by the Green Building Council, the USGBC LEED EB Platinum certification; only the 6th building to ever do so at that time. Both Mohawk and Shaw use scrap waste to burn fuel in their plants. It seems everyone in the flooring business is doing their part to reduce their footprint on the environment.
Whether you’re concerned with LEED points, CRI Green Label Plus or NSF 140, there are virtually thousands of products on the market that can fulfill your needs and Carpet & Tile Mart’s Commercial Division can help you find the product you’re looking for.
